BAHIA OF ALL PORTS
Responsible for, at least, 75% of the trading balance in Bahia, the ports of Salvador, Aratu-Candeias and Ilhéus are managed by the Companhia das Docas do Estado da Bahia (CODEBA), whose mission is to provide infrastructure and to ensure the effectiveness of operations and port services at public terminals in the state, Always with ethics, transparency and respect for current legislation, in addition to valuing human capital and a commitment to social, environmental and innovation issues.
To maximize the logistical potential advantages offered by Bahia, which has the longest coastline in the country and Brazil´s sixth largest economy, CODEBA, based on corporate governance, implements innovative practices that result in urgently promoting disruptive innovation in management, operation and business development, aiming at the effective economic insertion of the state´s organized ports in long-haul shipping and coastal shipping.
With wide competitive advantages, the public ports of Bahia present themselves as the best options for the productive complex of the State. The economic activity that gets stronger around the Camaçari Industrial Pole, for example, is served by the terminals of Salvador and Aratu-Candeias, both located at the Baía de Todos-os-Santos, the second largest bay in Brazil, with the best natural conditions for port activities, and excellent access, through sea and land. These characteristics contribute to a considerable reduction in costs related to cargo handling.
PORT OF ARATU-CANDEIAS
The Port of Aratu-Candeias, also located at the Baía de Todos-os-Santos, in Caboto Bay, plays the role of inductor of the industrial development process in Bahia, enabling the two main centers of the sector in the state: the Industrial Center of Aratu (CIA) and the Camaçari Industrial Pole.
A discontinuous expansion of the Port of Salvador, Aratu-Candeias in one of the most important outlets for chemical and petrochemical production throughout the country.
Its area of influence extends to Sergipe, Alagoas, Western Pernambuco and northern Minas Gerais, operating with four terminals for handling bulk solids, liquid and gaseous products. This structure allows the port to operate with a wide variety of cargoes, simultaneously handling ore and chemical products. Among the main products handled are fertilizers, naphtha, copper concentrate, lilquid petrochemicals and liquefied gases.
PORT OF SALVADOR
The Port of Salvador has the potencial to be the hub port (concentrating port) in the Northeast and its main characteristic is an export profile, with an emphasis on the handling of containers, general cargo, wheat, cellulose and also in the reception of maritime cruises. It is one of the largest fruit exporters in Brazil, with an expressive participation in foreign trade.
With a decisive role for the Bahia economy, the Port of Salvador stands out for its strategic position in relation to the European continent and Mercosur. Its area of influence include, in addition to Bahia, the north of Minas Gerais, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará. It is also one of the main destinations on the Brazilian coastline cruise routes.
In recent years, the Port of Salvador has received substantial investments in its infrastructure, such as the Baía de Todos-os-Santos Freeway, which connects it to Highway BR-324 one of the main national roads; the dredging of the access channel and the evolution basin; the construction of the new passenger terminal; modernization and purchase of new equipment for the container terminal and for unloading wheat. The Port of Salvador will also be an even more viable option for producers in the Recôncavo and BaixoSul region, after the construction of the future Salvador-Itaparica Bridge.
PORT OF ILHÉUS
The Port of Ilhéus, in the south of the state of Bahia, meets the demand for products from the west of Bahia, mainly soybeans and products from its hinterland, magnesite, magnesium oxide, in addition to equipment for the wind power generation plant and cocoa beans to meet the needs of chocolate industries installed in the region. It has also stood out in the tourism segment, receiving a considerable number of cruise ships each year during peak seasons, before the pandemics of COVID-19.
In recent decades, with the decline of the cocoa culture, the Port of Ilhéus has gained a new profile, seeking to expand its area of influence, attracting different cargoes from various regions of Bahia and other states. Porto Ilhéus is as natural option for cargo from the north of Minas Gerais.
POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES
Codeba has the prospect of great advances for its ports which, in addition to a great differential in terms of installed capacity, have the availability of areas for granting. In the strategic planning from 2020 to 2024, several improvement projects are foreseen, with the Company’s own resources, the Federal Government and private companies.
In line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the priority is to invest in access channels, evolution basins and mooring structures, to allow for a greater flow of ships, especially large ones; leverage export performance; reduce logistic-operational costs; increase productivity and competitiveness; invest in infrastructure, technological modernization, optimization of resources and integration with other modes, such as rail and road.
The measures seek to increase operational and managerial efficiency and the efficiency of the services provided, aiming at responsible results that go beyond obtaining profits. These are environmental sustainability, health, safety at work and – with due emphasis – the enhancement of human capital. The main goal is to ensure the effectiveness of CODEBA’s actions, in which the focus is excellence.
